How You Can Help
How You Can Help
There are many ways in which you can help Stephen’s Heart. We accept donations of handmade baby blankets and hats. These items can be knitted or crocheted, but they must be handmade and brand new. We also accept monetary donations and gift cards to craft stores (such as JoAnn Fabrics or Michael’s). Donations will be used to purchase yarn and other supplies such as keepsake boxes. You can also help by following Stephen’s Heart on Facebook and sharing the page with your friends.
Frequently Asked Questions
I want to donate a baby blanket and hat. What’s the next step?
We accept donations of brand new, handmade baby blankets and hats (crocheted or knitted). The preferred colors are pastel blue and pastel pink. For many parents, this may be the only time they see their baby. Pictures are usually taken at the hospital and parents want the baby’s gender to be instantly recognizable.
What size should my blanket be?
Your blanket can be as small as 14” square to as large as 30” square. Keep in mind that stillborn babies can range in size from a 20‐week‐ old baby who weighs less than a pound to a full‐term, 10 pound baby. Sets of twin blankets are also needed.
I don’t know how to make a hat. Can I still donate a blanket?
If you do not know how to make a hat, please include 1/4 skein of coordinating yarn with your blanket and one of the Stephen’s Heart helpers will make a hat.
All your hats have hearts on them. How do I make a heart?
We can share a knitting pattern for the hearts with you, or one of the Stephen’s Heart helpers will make a heart for your hat if you don’t know how. The heart is the organization’s signature and every handmade item that is donated comes with a heart. You may notice that the hearts on the hats are not centered and straight. That’s because none of our hearts have been the same since Stephen died.
