About
Stephen's Story
We cannot tell Stephen's story without telling the story of his mother, Renee. It is with heavy hearts that we share that Renee passed away in 2018 after a hard fought battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her husband, their young son, her loving family members and many dear friends.
Renee wrote these words for the original brochure for Stephen's Heart in early 2014:
My husband and I went to the hospital one day for an ultrasound because I had not felt the baby kick for a few hours. Instead of being informed I was a paranoid expectant mother our son was perfectly fine, we were told that he had no heartbeat. I was required to go through labor and delivery like any other mother, except I didn't get to leave the hospital with my baby; I left with a plastic bag filled with "memories" of my son.
After Stephen was stillborn, I was touched when the nurses dressed him in a handmade gown and blanket made by a caring stranger. Before I left the hospital the next morning, I knew that I wanted to give back to other parents experiencing the same pain we were feeling. My mom made Stephen a beautiful blanket and hat for his cremation. The hat had a tiny crooked heart, and the idea behind Stephen's Heart was formed.
Stephen's Heart Today
Renee's family and friends are committed to continuing the work of Stephen’s Heart in her memory, in Stephen's memory, and in support of others who have faced pregnancy and infant loss. We will honor her wishes and do our utmost to achieve her mission to provide homemade baby blanket and hat sets to grieving parents who have suffered pregnancy and infant loss.
Currently, these blanket and hat sets are donated to local hospitals in the Maryland area. However, Renee often received requests that came from other parts of the United States and throughout the world so please reach out to us if you are out of the area.
